Taiwan Travel Diary: Part 1

It was freezing cold in Sydney, but it was the other way around on this side of the world.
While the other girls stayed in Sydney during the winter break, I went back to my hometown and travelled to Taiwan for eight days. It was one of the hottest summer I have ever experienced. The heat was really unbearable, nearly 40 degrees.

Taiwan is famous for its night markets, I couldn't even remember how many markets I visited during my stay. One of the biggest (or is the biggest) night markets in Taiwan is Shilin Market.

There was this one stall where you could eat the prawns that you've caught yourself with a chopstick. They've stuck a very thin string with a little hook at its end. It seemed interesting so I decided to give it a try. The string was so easy to break inside the water, so you have to catch the prawns quickly. Looked easy, but really, it wasn't. Poor little prawn got grilled. But oh it tasted amaaazing

Taiwanese fried chicken is a must-try! It's called Hot Star and its stores were literally everywhere on the street. Actually this food store is also available in both Sydney and my hometown, but it seems appropriately mandatory to eat it where it originated from. The queue got so long at night, blocking the whole street. Lucky for me, I bought it before the market got too crowded.

These are the Taiwanese soldiers who guard the palace. I often wonder how they could stand still for hours in the sun and rain. And how could they not laugh when people stare at them? I can only imagine what I would be doing if I were to be a soldier... I wouldn't be able to hold my smile back, let alone a laugh. Haha!

This is called Taroko Gorge, the Grand Canyon of Taiwan. It looked breathtaking and we were supposed to come in a little further. I was only able to appreciate the view from its front side because unfortunately, a big typhoon hit the city several days before my arrival, broke all the bridges and caused a huge land slide in the area. They said that it would be too dangerous to come in and go to the canyons. But let us still gape at the amazingness of this view.

Stay tuned for more updates on my Taiwan trip!
